Leading with Reflection: How Zoah Consultancy Supported Alzheimer’s Society to Transform Manager Wellbeing

In early 2023, Alzheimer’s Society faced a growing challenge: their frontline managers were emotionally overstretched, operating in a post-COVID world where the usual day-to-day peer support had all but vanished. Despite access to therapy and wellbeing apps, it became clear that these reactive resources weren’t enough. Managers needed space to pause, reflect, and lead with greater intention.

That’s where our partnership began.

At Zoah, we believe that mindset isn’t just a personal asset — it’s a leadership skill. So, when Alzheimer’s Society came to us seeking a way to strengthen their management capability and support emotional wellbeing, we knew reflective practice was the answer.

Why Reflective Practice?

Inspired by clinical models in social care, reflective practice equips managers to process challenging experiences, develop emotional resilience, and lead with greater clarity. Instead of outsourcing wellbeing to external therapists, Alzheimer’s Society wanted to empower their people from within.

This meant helping managers:

  • Feel more confident holding emotional space for their teams
  • Build stronger supervision habits
  • Lead with intention and purpose — even under pressure

Why Zoah?

From our very first conversation with the team, we knew this partnership would be special. Our proposal featured the use of Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle — a model that resonated with both the social care ethos and the leadership development goals of the Society. As Kate Gledhill, one of the programme sponsors, shared:

“From the beginning, it felt like you’d listened. You didn’t fly in with something off the shelf — you brought a solution that reflected our context. That’s what made Zoah the right fit.”

What We Delivered

Across multiple cohorts, Zoah delivered a bespoke Reflective Practice Programme designed specifically for Alzheimer’s Society managers. Each session created a psychologically safe space to:

  • Slow down and process emotionally demanding situations
  • Use structured models (like Gibbs) to guide their thinking
  • Strengthen confidence and clarity in how they lead

Alongside the workshops, we worked closely with internal stakeholders to adapt, co-create, and ensure the programme delivered real value.

“You were incredibly responsive and reflective. It felt like we were in safe hands the whole way through.”

The Results

While culture change takes time, the early signs of impact were clear:

  • Managers reported feeling more confident in supporting team wellbeing
  • More managers of colour spoke up in our sessions than in previous training
  • The organisation saw a drop in therapy requests — suggesting leaders felt more equipped to hold space

And most importantly, as one participant put it:

“This was the most human and helpful training I’ve had in years.”

Why This Matters

Organisations often treat emotional wellbeing and leadership as two separate things. But they’re not. When managers feel confident, grounded, and equipped to lead reflectively, the whole team benefits.

At Zoah, we don’t just teach skills. We help leaders think differently. Because real change starts in the mind.
